Meheba Women's Center - July 2009

posted 03/29/10 18:06:09 by

Summary of project status and achievements:

The Women’s Centre continued to run saving circles and saw the repatriation of one of their members to Angola. This repatriation ran smoothly in terms of the saving circle, as the woman was able to pay back all outstanding loans before leaving as well as to receive her savings and the calculated portion of interest belonging to her.

On July 27th the Women’s Centre began an outreach workshop in Block B with thirty new students. This workshop will run for six weeks and will teach knitting and tailoring along with issues related to women’s health, SGBV, maternal health, nutrition, etc. and will hopefully garner new interest in a saving circle in Block B.

Future activities and projections:

The volunteers that will be coming in August have expressed a desire to work with the Women’s Centre. It is the opinion of the Project Manager that a good project for them will be doing a feasibility survey to determine if the Women’s Centre might be able to take on the role of helping women who have been victims of gender based and domestic violence to navigate the systems in place in the camp to assist them. It has been brought to our attention that there can often be a break down in accessing this help.

As well, the women’s center will continue to run it’s outreach workshop in Block B on tailoring and knitting. This workshop began on July 27th and runs for six weeks.
