Meheba Women's Center - April 2009

posted 03/29/10 18:02:44 by

Summary of project status and achievements:

This month, the new 8-week Outreach Workshop began at Road 29. Fifteen women registered for knitting, fifteen women for tailoring, and all will be taking classes on Reproductive Health, Childcare and Nutrition, and SGBV. Registration was held on April 6th and the class began on April 20th. Jacqui and Annita are co-teaching the workshop while Dinah works half-time at the Women’s Centre to run the Savings Circles.

Jacqui and Annita also traveled to Road 44 and Block H to speak to those women about Savings Circle participation. The women at Road 44 maintain that they are still not ready to begin because of cultivation. The women at Block H expressed concerns regarding saving and repatriation. They are hesitant to begin saving when UNHCR is telling them that they will soon need to leave the settlement. Jacqui and Annita told the women that they will return in a week or two to see what conclusion the women have reached. In the meantime, the other Savings Circles are proceeding well.

There were also two informal counseling cases that were referred to Community Services.

Future activities and projections:

Next month, the Outreach Workshop will continue. The PM is considering increasing Dinah to full-time, so that she will be occupying the full-time position that Florinda would have begun in March. This way, the Women’s Centre will be able to resume their monthly 4-day workshops held at the Centre even while two staff members continue to teach the Outreach in other blocks. Dinah previously co-taught a 4-day workshop with Annita, so she is prepared.
