Dufatanye Preschool
Summary of project status and achievements:
March saw the closing of Term I for Dufatanye preschool. Posttests were administered to the students while our two new teachers, Cecilia and Florence successfully completed their first Term as FORGE employees. Progress towards Coordinator’s goals/Trends from Indicators: The Dufatanye pupils maintained consistent attendance and scored well on their posttest exams. The coordinator and the Site Manager hope to see attendance improve with the full implementation of the school feeding program beginning in May.
No progress has been made towards the goal of financial independence/sustainability. The Site Manager has urged the coordinator to schedule community meetings in order to discuss this situation but something always comes up and the meeting is canceled. The Site Manager feels that the coordinator is not serious about sustainability and will be working hard this month to make sure he understands the importance of this exercise.
Future activities and goals:
In April, the teachers will commence training in preparation for the beginning of Term II. It is their hope, as well of that as the SM that with the time off to reflect and improve, they will have a smooth beginning to Term II.

Substantial problems or issues:
In late March, the G Community school closed for a week in order to repair the students’ restrooms. As a result, Dufatanye closed as well, because the older students were not around to accompany their young siblings to class.
Kunachi Preschool
Summary of project status and achievements:
Much like its sister institution, Dufatanye, Kunachi closed its doors in March after a difficult and challenging Term I. Attendance plummeted due to the riot and still has not recovered. Kelvin and Duminga preformed admirably despite these challenges, and the SM is happy with their progress as leaders of the school.
Progress towards Coordinator’s goals/Trends from Indicators:
Attendance began to bounce back by the end of Term I. Kelvin, the head teacher, hopes that this will carry over into Term II beginning in May. It is his goal that attendance will recover to pre-riot levels by the end of the term. A new delivery of food/equipment for the UNHCR school feeding program (scheduled for April) should assist with this goal.
Future activities and goals:
In April both teachers will commence training Pretty, the new teacher hired to replace Chitula. Pretty will manage Duminga’s classroom while she is on maternity leave in April/May/June. If attendance warrants a substitute will be found as a third teacher until Duminga can return to work.
It is the goal of the Head Teacher that attendance will reach pre-riot levels before the end of the term.
Kelvin has announced his intentions to leave the settlement. He has applied for scholarship to university in Lusaka and declares that if he doesn’t get selected he will repatriate to Angola. The Head Teacher and SM have began to discuss who should succeed him in his post.

I am Duminga Zuze, a Kunachi pre-school teacher. At first, I was a Dufatanye pre-school teacher at Block G. After opening schools in January 2010 I was transered from Dufatanye to Kunachi pre-school which is located at Block D. I was very much happy to be transferred, unfortunately the pupils which I found at Kunachi they were not used with me until three weeks that’s when they were used with me so things are now ok.
From the opening day we were okey and we did monitoring and evaluation most of the pupils did well but during evaluation riote among congoleese started and it wasn’t good to my side because the pupils were missing lessons so it took almost one month and the problems (riot) ended this time all things are well.
And I thank to the UNHCR for the gift (food) which we received for our pupils, I say thank you very much.

The sated school has the total number of two hundred fifty five pupils and compressed about three classes or grades. The mentioned Block is always clean and teachers are well organized, cooperative and punctual, effectively. Pupils at the school have finished writing their tests actually the one she a girls from class A who scored 100%, Class C, a boy and Class B for baies. One boy and a girls same position. Actually our main objectives for next year is to empowering relevant knowledge to pupils effectively. Comment the center needs material such manila paper, big dictionary next term etc and the term would like to thank FORGE for this project because its empowering many people who don’t have money to pay but they are able to, even us teachers we are gaining knowledge from this project as well because some of us we had no skill but no we has more skills. So I am here standing firmly to say although we do get k100,000 per month but may this organization continue to support refugees at all. I think you too.
Dufatanye
My name is Ernest a teacher of Dufatanye preschool class A in Block G Meheba refugee Settlement. First and foremost I enjoyed teach almost 62 pupils although they are many.
I was so excited on how all my lessons went on smoothly as a result my pupils are capiable to communicate in English.
Apart from that I was so delighted for the competition which I conducted. This is FORGE Dufatanye preschool 2009 graduates against Basic School First grade pupils. By doing s oI wanted to see if my preschool pupils may be able to compete finally their performance was so encouraging. Look at the way I organized debate and poem between forge Dufatanye preschool and Basic School first grade. I was a happiest to see my pupils using English with good pronanciation and also them were happy to use English as a foreign language.
Finally I was so deeply appreciate of the encouragement, total cooperation and technical advice received from my project manager M. Jeremy Simon.
Before I step down, thanksgiving to all my collegues whom I have generously shared my specialized knowledge with them in order that the November 2009 program might be accurate and completed.

First and foremost I would like to introduce our school. Dufatanye preschool is located in block G of Meheba refugee settlement, at road 83. We opened the school this term on 7th September 2009.
However, Dufatanye preschool have 150 pupils. And from the time we have opened the number of pupils have been increasing every day, due to the feeding programme that the children have had hence we hope that it will bring good attendance this term.
Meanwhile our children or rather pupils are doing really fine they are able to write and draw very well. In addition to that our pupils they are able to understand English very well for example when you say sit down, stop making noise or to close the door and to sing they are able to do so.
Also we have come to discover that pupils in all our three classes are very bright. They also enjoy playing with toys, singing songs, skipping, colouring et . These are some of the great achievement we are proud of as their teachers.

To start with I would like to introduce our school. Dufatanye preschool is located in Block ‘G’ of Meheba Refugee Settlement at road 83. The school has about 150 pupils that are registered; also there are 3 classes which one class contains 50 kids. I, as preschool teacher at Dufatanye I began work on 1st June 2009, being as a new teacher who was selected recently after FORGE was hiring for some new teachers I felt very happy. On 2nd June 2009 that is when I reported for work on the first day I spent a day to introduce myself. It was really good for me because the pupils were really very excited to see their new teacher.
During the day I introduced myself we did not teach because I tried to carry out test for monitoring and evaluation, basically it was to see how much the pupils knew already. Really it was very good the response was overwhelming like most of the pupils were doing academically fine while few were not able to perform well for example I tried to point at some pupils and when you tell them to sit down they will also answer ‘sit down’ and when you as stop making noise they will also say ‘stop making noise’. So even though some pupils were not able to perform better but one thing that I as a Dufatanye preschool teacher am proud to say is that most of the pupils are really doing fine and they are bright. These pupils like playing football, singing songs, skipping, coloring and drawing. As of now our pupils are able to read and write. This really makes them more happy to be in class. So far we are waiting to open our school for the third term in September. We wish to meet our students again since we really miss them so much.

Administration the school begins the lessons at 0800 hours till at 11:30 hrs and school three teachers two male and one female and all have different nationality e.g. like Rwandis, Congolies and Angolian actually these people the are well co-operated with us teacher because they do bring their children in time every day. Actually us teacrs would like say thanks very much the support the organization of FORGE which is being afford on us refugees to see this kind of achievement from our pupils whom we are being taught theres a progress going toward indeed. The community is wishing to say thanks for the work which is FORGE project to be coming Meheba at Block ‘D’ center we wish to say may the almighty lord bless project and grow big.
Thank you

Summary of project status and achievements:
Term I proceeded at Dufatanye in February. The two new teachers continued to improve at their jobs and the attendance became more regular.
A disturbance at ‘G’ community regarding the headmaster stealing supplies interrupted school for a few days because Dufatanye pupils rely on their older siblings at Community to escort them in the mornings.
Future activities and projections:
In March, Dufatanye will wrap up Term I with post-tests. The teachers are excited to see how their pupils have progressed during the first term of the year.

Kunachi:
Summary of project status and achievements:
While the major disturbances at 36 have had a negative impact on Kunachi school in terms of attendance, the smaller number of students has given the two teachers the opportunity to settle in to their new role independent of a coordinator. Both Duminga and Kelvin have excelled with their new responsibilities and are looking forward to adding a new teacher when attendance requires it.
Future activities and projections:
Like Dufatanye, Kunachi will end Term I at the end of March. Both teachers are excited to add a third staff member to complete the staff.
